18 weeks maternity leave reccommended

Business leaders say they will not be persuaded to reverse their opposition to the Coalition's plan for paid parental leave. Tony Abbott's policy would tax big business, to fund a scheme offering six-months leave at full pay.

Tony Abbott has responded to initial objections from employers by saying he too, needed convincing. But Heather Ridout from the Australian Industry Group has told John and Sandy plan is unworkable.

Blog comments Your Say

  • Definately in favour of Abbotts paid maternity leave scream - Big business benifits massively from couple establishing families - Families for too long have had to bear a the full cost of their cotribution to wider society - Splitting income for tax purposes to include all spouse and all children has been a feature of the French tax system - Such a scheme has been proposed for Aust on several occasions - Rather than Abott doing a backflip .. This was flagged in his book Battleline
