Academy Awards announced in LA
Merryl Streep and George Clooney among the nominees for the Academy Awards, but there are only a handful of Aussies in the running. Jason Morrison & Richard Arnold on the movies topping the Oscar nominations.
Surprise nominations, shock snubs and a cold shoulder for Australian actors were delivered when the nominees for next month's Oscar ceremony were revealed overnight.
The Martin Scorsese directed Hugo was the big winner with 11 nominations, just ahead of silent film The Artist's 10, while the shining light for Australia is Sydney-born film editor Kirk Baxter.
Baxter, who won last year for The Social Network, received his third Oscar nomination for his work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Australian producer Grant Hill is also in line to pick up a best picture Oscar after Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life was a surprise best picture nominee.
Australian sound mixer Andy Nelson scored the 15th Oscar nomination of his career for the Steven Spielberg-directed World War I drama, War Horse. Nelson won an Oscar in 1999 for another Spielberg war film, Saving Private Ryan.
