Asylum seeker boat angers Opposition

Asylum seeker boats still arriving on Australia's coast

The rescue of another boatload of aslyum seekers trying to reach Australia by sea has prompted another Opposition attack on what they describe as 'queue jumpers.'

The Navy has rescued a boat carrying 8 people and 4 crew off the Tiwi Islands, just hours after rescuing another boatload of suspected refugees.

Shadow Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says the Rudd Government needs to return to the Howard Government's policies to stop boats travelling here.

Have your say on whether the Rudd government should re-consider implementing the former Howard government policies on thwarting asylum seekers from reaching Australia by boat.

  • Colleen, a refugee is not a poor person, as sad as their condition is we don't take people into Australia just because they are poor. A refugee is someone with a genuine fear of persecution, their life is in danger. You won't be assessed to be a refugee just becasue you have no money, your life actually has be threatened for particular reasons. Even being in the middle of a civil war won't make you a refugee. You might want to take up the cause of poor people in the world if you feel so strongly about them - I'm sure they need your help. I know about the asylum seekers who come here because I have spent time with hundreds of them. I know their stories, I know their families, I've seen all their documents, I know that some have taken years to repay debts and I know many who have come from the camps you talk about and had to deal with unscrupulous money lenders to get out of there. Most refugees in the world will never find a home, the world is too selfish, and that is why people resort to dangerous boat journeys. Please don't peddle urban myths and lies that have no basis. Get out and meet some people coming on the boats, put your facts together and then let us know the truth.

  • I wndered who the person was who knows exactly how these illegals got here. It's Mr Truth Please ,who seems to have inside information on the wealth, or lack of, boat people. According to him/her they sell their cars or lands or borrow money to buy their passage here. AND he knows with certainty that arriving here with no documents is a myth, AND they ARE genuine refugees. Pity the poor GENUINE asylum seekers in camps, in tents and living in indescribable poverty who don't have cars and land to sell*/-

I wondered who the genius was who knew first hand the illegals ARE genuine refugees, AND had papers, AND of course the reason they got here was they had cars and land to sell to pay their way. It's Mr/Ms truth please. The refugees I'm aware of are the poor creatures living in tents and camps in indescribable poverty
who don't own cars and land to sell to pay their fare here. I'm heard some gullible dills, but you take the cake. And don't pity me, pity the needy here in Australia living hand to mouth week to week with no one to care whether they live or die. Once upon a time charity DID begin at home. You're the one to be pitied.

  • I suppose you could argue for and against what the Government is doing. Regardless of whatever the answer is, the Govermnemt seems to have no intention of stopping the boats. Now I have a ripper of an idea. Why don't we send our own boats to bring them here? We could charge half the price, put the people smugglers out of business, guarantee safe passage and still make a fortune! Come on Kev, lets get with it. We have to pay for all of your spending somehow.

  • Colleen, you clearly don't understand that money will not protect anyone from being a refugee. And many of the people on boats have borrowed the money, sold a car or piece of land, etc, to pay for the boat trip, becasue their life was in danger - they come here in debt. If you can't feel sorry for someone in that situation I can only pity you. And really, do you not realise that a would be terrorist is more likely to arrive by plane than on a boat where immediate detention and processing is the result. And please stop peddling the myth of all refugees on boats tearing up documents. Most are genuine refugees and provide documents to prove their identitiy.

  • It seems people are more concerned with "naming the elephant" or "bingle and clarke" than the regular influx of boat people to Australia. If you think it's only a few hundred, think again. Most are probably unskilled so they'll hit the welfare system, that's YOUR pockets, and mine, free housing, free medical and of course the extended families will be able to join them here. And all at the tax payers expense. While on this website there's a news flash that pensioners who were promised a raise this coming week may now have cuts, all thanks to K Rudd. Another broken promise, but they can find MILLIONS to prop up foreigners who only have to rent a leaky boat and they are in welfare paradise.

  • If there were only ONE would be terrorist on each of these boats. ready to join up with the ones who hate us, already here, we would be at enormous risk. Why in the name of God is this dopey government allowing these free loaders in? And PLEASE! Don't tell me they are asylum seekers. Genuine refugees don't have wads of cash to fly to where they can get a boat to Australia. AND genuine refugees don't tear up papers than can identify them and their country of origin. I'm fed up to the back teeth with bleeding hearts telling us how desperate these people are. How would they know when they can't be identified. Sinc 911 I don't trust anyone landing on our shores in leaky boats. And I trust this government less.
