Asylum: why Nauru won't work
Who should swallow their pride on asylum seeker policy? John Stanley on why sending refugees to Nauru won't stop the boats. Simplistic mantras don't work. Here's why the Malaysian solution is the better deterrent.

Well, No actually Doug, the Labor Government did not have the numbers, that is why they hitched up with the Greens and the Independents. They definately won't have the numbers now! Oh, and by the way, this latest and all the other stuff ups are nothing to do with the Opposition, but you can't see handle the truth can you!

I disagree that the Nauru option will not work, the High Court even stated this as they mention, in almost surprise, that the Government's submission made mention of Nauru. They also point out the differences between Malaysia and Nauru in that Nauru was always under Australian jurisdiction and therefore not fraught will the same problems. We cannot dictate to any country what they should and should not do in respect of treatment of people on their soil. Assurances that the 800 sent there would not be 'caned'? What, even if they are found to be breaking the law there? It is ludicrous to expect this and most of the public out there know that. To all the Greens and Academics 'voicing' their opposition to Offshore Processing I merely say this, your vote counts no more than mine or the rest of the Australian people, your opinions count even less!

No problem with Tony's plans as long he plans on sending back all the indians with them. The ones that he and Howard were happy to truck in because a small group wanted cut price labour. Cost more than a few jobs. How about that Tony, or is it just more hot air from you?

Greg it is not John who is misleading people it is Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison. They know full well that you can no longer just turn the boats around as the countries that they came from WON'T take them back any more. The smugglers know this and so does Tony Abbott. When you try to do this the boats are damaged so that the people have to be picked up or drown. Sending people to Nauru (which would be a far better life than in Malaysia) will not stop them getting on boats as they know that they will end up here anyway.
