Lord Mayor Clover Moore wants to close George street to traffic

George St will be dug up during the next state election campaign to build two new light rail lines.

The State Government says it's treating its light rail development as one project in order to minimise disruption.

Work will begin next year on building the CBD and eastern suburbs line at the same time.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian says they'll be making sure there is as little disruption as possible to workers and commuters.
