Julia Gillard speaks with the media ahead of a leadership battle

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will call a ballot for the Labor Party leadership at 10am on Monday after Kevin Rudd's resignation as Foreign Minister.

Ms Gillard says it's in the interest of the Labor Party and the Australian nation for the matter to be settled.

She's confirmed she will renominate for the leadership and expects to receive the support of her colleagues.

But Ms Gillard says if she doesn't win the leadership she will go to the backbench and renounce any further leadership ambitions and she's called on Mr Rudd to do the same.

Greens Leader Bob Brown says he will work with whoever is Prime Minister following Labor's leadership ballot on Monday, but he expects Julia Gillard will win.

Senator Brown has revealed Kevin Rudd tried to call him just hours after announcing his resignation from Washington.

He says he will continue to have a constructive relationship with whoever is leading Labor.

Michael Pachi reveals the all-out assault on Kevin Rudd's credibility has continued today, with Julia Gillard claiming he sabotaged the last election campaign.

Prime ministers who have been kicked out of office:

JAMES SCULLIN

Labor

October 22, 1929 to January 6, 1932.

Scullin's time in office was described by one of his ministers as governing a `serpent's nest'. In 1931, the `Lang Labor' splinter group who held the balance of power in the House of Representatives aligned themselves with the opposition. The group then challenged the government and passed a `no confidence' motion, which brought down the government on November 25. Labor lost the election held on December 19 and the United Australia Party formed the next government in January 1932.

ARTHUR FADDEN

Country Party (coalition) August 29, 1941 to October 7, 1941.

Arthur Fadden spent `40 days and 40 nights' in office before his coalition government fell after being defeated in a vote in the House of Representatives.

JOHN GORTON

Liberal (coalition with Country Party) January 10, 1968 to March 10, 1971.

John Gorton was the only senator ever to become prime minister and the only prime minister to vote himself out of office after a tied 33-33 party vote of confidence in his leadership.

GOUGH WHITLAM

Labor

December 5, 1972 to November 11, 1975.

After a series of scandals involving ALP ministers and attempts to acquire foreign loans, the Whitlam government's budget was blocked in the Senate by the Liberal-National Country Party, who tried to force an election. On November 11, 1975 Governor-General John Kerr removed Gough Whitlam from office and Liberal leader Malcolm Fraser stood in as leader until an election was called.

BOB HAWKE

Labor March 11, 1983 to December 20, 1991.

In 1991, Treasurer Paul Keating contested Bob Hawke's leadership but lost the ballot in mid-1991 and retired to the backbench. On December 12, Hawke was advised by Labor ministers to resign and another ballot was called when he refused. Keating narrowly won the leadership vote and Hawke was removed from office.

KEVIN RUDD

Labor

December 3, 2007 to June 24, 2010.

Australia's second most popular prime minister Kevin Rudd is forced to resign and make way for the country's first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Rudd agreed to step down, avoiding a leadership ballot with Gillard.

  • Slippery LIEberal more slips from you, symptomatic of the numerous slips by your boss Phony Abbott.

What Bob Katter had said is on record and you can look it up. In case you forget, let me ppint out he did did not go with Labour in forming the govt. At the time both parties were wooing him, he openly said Phony Abbott's figures don't add up. The truth is, Phony and his LIEberal mob tried to bribe all of the Independents and Greens. Arguably, it should have been easier for him to convince the three independents at least, but he went about it in such a wrong way thinking that he only had to offer more than what he thought Labour had offered. He did not try to convince them on policies. He thought their intelligence was at his own level. His stratgey spectacularly backfired as the independents realised this goof has no clue about policies.

Only Bob Katter went with him and that had nothing to do with Phony's convincing. Katter did not like Kevin Rudd's dismissal and he was against the mining tax.

The reason why Phony Abbott and the LIEberal party does not produce any policies is because they don't have anyone with brains to do it. If you leave out Turnbull the collective IQ of the LIEbs would struggle to reach 50.

  • When will these idiots get it? Us sheeple dont give two stuffs about Labor or Liberal parties or their principles. How many people out of 25 million are actually members of these parties, you would be lucky to have 30-40 thousand each. They are there to feather their own nests and those of their business buddies, we the sheeple come second. Thats why we have a carbon tax and a pair of idiots who think we want them as our leaders. When and only when they put Australians first over party and thats parties principles will this country move forward. Rudd And Gillard don't fit this criteria.

Slippery Liebor Rats Friday 24 February, 2012 - 9:20 AM
  • @Slippery Rats, getting slippery again with the truth like your leader Phony ABoott, eh?

The black hole of the LIEberal party was first detected by the independents when PHONY Abbott tried to bribe them to get them on his side. Even Bob Katter said that Phony had not done his sums before making the offer.

Throughout the course of the last election, and even after that, Phony Abbott, JuLIE Bishop, Joe Jockey and the LIEberal party were caught red handed several times with BLACK HOLES in their figures, but you acolytes won't notice that, would you?

  • if julia said to me that she would give me a million dollars and remove the carbon tax, I wouldn't vote for her, even that I live week to week on my paycheck that I work really hard for, If Kevin said he would remove the carbon tax and NOT give me a million dollars I would vote for him in second, the difference is when he was pm, he was listening to julia the education minister who let us tax payers pay over 600% on school additions, Also he listen to Garrett over the housing insulation debacle that burnt down tons of houses and killed a few installers and home owners, Really If peter stuck to singing I would be happy, and if Julia stuck to being a lawyer, the whole country would be exited never to hear her mono-tone voice ever gain. Plus all of her lies, Back stabbing, etc she is a waste of space and as a appointed Prime Minister, she's never been considered a real Prime Minister in my house, Really she needs to held accountable, for a being part of one of largest tax payers ripp-off's in history.
If there are any labor members of government who is readying this, Vote Kevin in if you want to keep your Job after the next election because Julia is a sinking ship.
