Hand keys over to young drivers?

Young drivers should be given latest generation of cars

The best thing parents can do for young drivers is hand over the car keys, rather than buy an old clunker. National Roads Safety Chairman Roger Cook tells John & Sandy the current generation of cars are safer.

  • I tried a different approach with my son. I made a car for him at age 15 and told him he would have to buy his own car if he wanted to get his licence before he was 19. He could not afford one so 19 it was.

The "car" I made consisted of a Vanguard chassis, 2 litre Cortina engine and auto trans, Datson 180B front and rear suspension, Fairlane seats and Mazda Bongo fuel tank. It had a full roll cage, lap/sash seat belts and some corrugated iron panels mainly to keep mud and cow manure off the occupants. The rule was he, and anyone in it with him, had to use the belts and wear a helmet.

He thrashed it around our paddocks for years but always lost control everytime he pushed it too hard. It taught him many things but the main one was he did not have the driving skills of Peter Brock and he was never going to get them.

He has now been driving for 16 years, he drives everyday for a living and has never had an accident.

I don't think the type of car is the answer, it is the initial training that makes the most difference.
