Health rebate to be means tested
From July people earning more than $83,000 no longer receive a 30% discount on their health insurance premiums. Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says the Government's changes will make the health system fairer.
The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed legislation that aims to means-test the 30 per cent rebate from July 1.
The rebate will be means-tested for individuals earning more than $83,000 and couples earning more than $166,000.
Individuals earning more than $129,000 and couples on incomes greater than $258,000 will lose the rebate.
The measure will save taxpayers $2.4 billion over the next three years or $100 billion over the next 40 years.

Peter B, I know it is hard for a white cane diehard LIEberal like you to see anything other than Labour in anything you don't like. The fact is, I am not a Labour man, and you would see ample proof of that in some of my strong criticisms of the Labour party here. It just happens that the other mob of the Phony Abott is even worse.
As for your take on Labour's main intention to deliver a surplus, I think it is a flawed policy. If anything, this was a time to undertake deficit budgeting, but Labour has been browbeaten into the symbolic objective of budget surplus. I think they will achieve that but it is actually not necessary for the country.

If health funds are to be means tested , then , all these cashed up Illegal Criminals should pay for their own medical treatments !
One thing is sure , all their
" Fake " illnesses will disappear instantly !!!
Working Overtime & having two jobs sometimes , one pays a much higher taxation level!!!!
For only " HARDWORKING " Australians to be means tested is just sheer & utter DISCRIMINATION !!!!!sonja silic Sunday 19 February, 2012 - 5:43 PM -

I think it is fair, the money saved could be put back into the health system where it could provide service to those who are more in need.
