What we're talking about

Money for refugees Vs war veterans

Posted by: 2UE | 31 August, 2011 - 7:54 AM
War veteran pensioners calling for a little extra money?

Where are our priorities? Jason Morrison says war veterans desperate for a lift in their pension, shouldn't have to go begging and groveling. Yet, $5 million in phone cards are being given to refugees to phone lawyers?

  • Gentlemen,
This forum is for useful discussion, not politically biassed ranting. In my lifetime I have come to be apolitical as hindsight teaches us that almost all politicans will bow to the party line. Neither of the main political parties have demonstrated in the past that they will do the right thing for us pensioners, so my guess is that we use whatever clout we can muster to effect the required outcome. Do not use this forum to slag each other off. Be constructive, become active, agitate against our lot, involve others in our fight, make our ranks grow so that our vote becomes enormous. Fairness to all.

  • I thought I was fighting the DFRDB war all by myself, having served in the ADF for 22 years (RAAF Warrant Officer), however, it is refreshing to note that the unfair treatment by our current government to our claim for a "Fair Go" has been taken up by so many other ex-ADF members.

To this end I have joined (or about to) join the DFWA to assist anyway possible to continue the fight with the current government.

The letters I have received from DFRDB, as part of my inquiries, commutation being one major issue, have been worded to suit the government's current stand not to recognize our (DFRDB recipients) just claims.

Once the Labor/Greens government is removed from office the war may be won.

They should remember "old soldiers never die", nor will they forget come election day! The sooner the better!

  • PLEASE!! The people coming here are not seeking refuge, they're seeking a better economy, without having to contribute anything to ours. Correct me if I'm wrong. Genuine refugees are at this moment holed up in camps in Godforsaken places desperately hoping their names will be the next on the queue to be offered a new and safe life. They don't have thousands of dollars to pay the fare on leaky boats, nor do they look well fed. The ones coming here are ILLEGALS, and if that offends someone, tough luck. Anyone who tears up their papers so they can't be identified, in my book have something to hide. And while all the strapping young men who arrive in these boats are fleeing (supposedly) oppression, leaving their women and children behind to face it alone, OUR defence force men and women are fighting for the freedom of their country , risking their own lives. Sounds like a really bad swap to me.

  • The DFRBF fund was responsible for many heartbreaks, the cost of it to the member was well out of proportion, when a member was promoted, pay rise due to trade grouping etc the payback adjustments to a members pay placed him/her if long serving member at times trying to raise a family on restricted pay, even in debt to the sevice, but we percavered, only to find now that illegal immagrants and overseas countries are worth more to Australian politions than our servicemen, women, it's long over due for those elected by Australians were to look after Australian's,Australia

  • It is a sad day when the Government neglects the very people who serve to defend our country so well. Yet cannot find a few dollars to let them live in dignity the same as our pensioners. Not only did they contribute 5.5% their super funds but they are taxed on the income while pensioners are not. Is this the freedom they served for? Lets support our own.
