Nursing home fire safety shameful
Four months since the horror of the Quakers Hill nursing home. How many were killed? There are things we can do for it not to happen again. Jason Morrison reveals how exposed we leaving those who deserve more.
Its been revealed fewer than a-third of NSW nursing homes are fitted with fire-sprinklers, prompting calls for an overhaul to the law. Sarah Morice reports on the 2UE findings:
The Aged Care Industry is backing a push to all NSW Nursing Homes with fire sprinklers, but says the move will need government-funding.
A state wide audit, prompted by last year's fatal fire at the Quakers Hill Nursing Home, has revealed fewer than a-third of nursing homes have sprinklers.
Paul Murray speaks with the Aged Care Association's Charles Wurf who claims installing sprinklers will be a huge task.

It could be really simple thing to fix for future nursing homes
- all exterior and interior walls and ceiling made with concrete, Concrete is naturally cool to the touch unlike bricks that radiate heat even after the sun is down, Bricks store heat, concrete stores water and is a much tighter density substance. Plus you wouldn't need any wood structure. Concrete doesn't burn and wood does.
Next no carpet, carpet burns toxic chemicals and releases toxic fumes from the glues,
Only use ceramic they don't burn.
Only use fire rated steel doors, not wooden core, but steel.
Use only water based paints for the walls and ceiling, I've seen a house burn once that was painted in oil, the flames shot over my head just like I shot petrol on the ceiling, If the ceilings were made out of concrete with water based paint, it would never burn.
All electrical wires should be inside steel conduit, not plastic, plastic burns and once again steel doesn't.
Make all staff take a some sort of fire safety course, like how to use a fire extinguisher and what types of fires does it put out A,B,C ?? etc
Next make all hallways and rooms have a ceiling fire water sprinkler. Basically the building is designed to protect itself, walls, ceilings, floors that can't burn and save on heating/cooling. And ceilings that putout fires with sprinklers.
Heating should be under the tiles via water heating, Its the cheapest and cleanest way.
Cooling should be via F-W-T. <-- (my own idea).
