Reflections on Granville Train Disaster
Families of those who lost their lives in the Granville Train Disaster gather to mark 35 years since the tragedy. What became day after day, a huge rescue effort, we reflect on the tragedy, and remember the victims on this day.
Survivors have thrown roses onto the tracks at Granville to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Australia's worst train disaster.
Family, friends and survivors gathered at the site of the crash at 8.10, where they read out the names of the 83 people who lost their lives.
The Sydney-bound commuter train from Mount Victoria, in the Blue Mountains, derailed at Granville in Sydney's west and struck a concrete road overpass bringing down the bridge and cars moving across it onto the carriages below.
Reporter for 2UE at the time Paul Makin managed to be on the scene of the Granville Train Disaster in quick time 35 years ago. He speaks with David Oldfield about getting there, and his memories of the horror he found when he arrived.

The memorial service was the best service in 35 years but no praise was given to two of the men who worked endlessly for the past 10 months to make it happen. Whilst Mr Hennessey who has been there for the past 35 years but had no relationship to the disaster but found it a soap box for him to be seen following his fall from Deputy Mayor of the disgraced Campbelltown Council . The people behind the scenes went un-noticed. Shame on you news media, try finding out just who those two men were and give them the praise they deserve. Oh yes, they were two of the rescuers and 35 years later they are still caring for those who remain.

I agree Wazza. I too am disgusted at what the labor party crowd of abject no-hopers have done and continue to do to our once great country. The multitude of different races, especially the middle eastern lot they have brought in here through the 1980's to 2011 have utterly ruined our country!

I remember that day very well, my heart still today goes out tto the families that lost loved ones that day.
I remember being so worried about my Father because we all thought he was on that train, but by divine intervention my Dad happened to miss catching that train that day.

I can remember back then in 1977 when Granville was a really nice place to live. Just look at the rotten place now, whatever happened? These stinking Labor politicians have ruined Australia. Lest We Forget!
