Smoking bans for outdoor dining

Paul Murray on the proposed smoking bans across NSW

Smoking in outdoor dining areas will be banned in NSW from 2015 and at playgrounds, sports grounds and swimming pools as soon as possible.

Announcing the tobacco reforms, Health Minister Jillian Skinner said they were the next step in winding back smoking across the state.

The bans will include the beer garden at the local pubs, and that has upset Paul Murray. He'd like to know what you think of the bans on a legal product that government continues to strip revenue from.

The Cancer Council is praising the State Government's announcement today of new laws banning smoking in more paces.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner says the three year timeframe for the ban on smoking in alfresco dining areas is designed to honour a memorandum of understanding signed with clubs before the 2011 election.

The NSW Greens called for the government to ignore its MOU with the clubs industry, and immediately ban smoking in alfresco dining areas.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner tells Paul Murray the bans says legislation will soon be introduced into parliament to immediately ban smoking in playgrounds, public sports grounds, swimming pools, transport stops such as taxi ranks and entrances to public buildings.

Smoking will also be banned under the proposed laws at transport stops such as taxi ranks and entrances to public buildings.

  • Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, ban unleashed dogs too, cyclists on main roads and mobile phones on the go. Why didn`t people complain 30 years ago, we`ve become a nation of whingers. Dog bite victims visit the hospital more than smokers, you tolerate that, you tolerate women being forced to wear face coverings, the P.C brigade should get jobs.

  • Even if smoking is banned its not going to stop people from dying of cancer. It wont even reduce the numbers of people dying from cancer. Furthermore if anyone actually thinks the government cares about our health you had better get yourself a brain scan.

  • These bans do not go far enough, I have been saying for years that the Governments are only paying lipservice when it comes to child protection!
The Governments must implement a total ban on smoking (sucking on suicide sticks) everywhere there is a child or an adult that "is likely" to be affected by tobacco smoke! I regularly see mothers that are pushing a stroller and have a toddler with them smoking and holding the lit cigarette in front of the toddlers face, to me this is child abuse!
Then there us diabetics that are affected by tobacco smoke, it stops the utilisation of the insulin that we produce!

  • The old legal product arguement again. We are told they kill about 20,000 people each year. The last lot of health statistics I saw said one person in five in hospital was there due to a smoking related illness. I wonder what would be left of the hospital waiting list if they were not there? Other statistics show the health costs each year far exceed any taxes raised from their sales.

What is any Government supposed to do? You can't ignore the problems cigarettes cause. You can't ban them without causing massive social unrest. Apart from countless nicotine addicted people going crazy, the crooks will be brushing the dust off their Thompson sub machine guns and 1929 Buicks and the underworld will be off and running again.

The only way is what all Governments have been doing for years and that is endless new restrictions and higher taxes until everyone finally gives them up of their own accord.

  • Why wait until 2015 to ban the rotten, stinking, feral habit. Ban it now - entirely. Declare it an illegal substance and treat it the same as alcohol restrictions initially and other drugs but ban it completely in 6 months time. I am sick of breathing in the smoke of the feral bastards on railways stations, office buildings, footpaths, parks, and all other public places. And issue fines to those caught smoking in all restricted areas.
