TWO MURRAYS BLOG: Bullying
The parents of a MELBOURNE teenager who was bullied so much she took her own life are considering suing the four men who drove her to suicide.
RAE and DAMIEN PANLOCK also want the law changed, so workplace bullies can be sent to jail. When we understand what happened, it is difficult to argue against MR and MRS PANLOCK.
*19 year old BRODIE PANLOCK endured more than 12 months of abuse from her workmates at CAFÉ VAMP in suburban HAWTHORN in MELBOURNE.
*The court was told: she was held down by her colleagues, fish oil was poured into her bag, she was drenched in chocolate sauce, had rat poison left in her pay envelope, and was constantly told she was worthless.
*She was also teased about an earlier suicide attempt... and finally she could take it no more. She jumped off a car park in September 2006, and died in hospital three days later.
WORKSAFE VICTORIA took the owner of CAFÉ VAMP and some of his staff to court... alleging they failed to provide a safe workplace.
The owner, MARC LUIS DA CRUZ, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a safe workplace and environment... he and his company were fined a total of 280 thousand dollars, while BRODIE PANLOCK’s three workmates were fined a total of 90 thousand dollars for failing to take reasonable care for the health and safety of BRODIE PANLOCK.
It seems a very cheap price to pay for the life of a young woman described by her mother as her... little ray of sunshine - a beautiful girl who was full of compassion.
RAE PANLOCK says as far as she is concerned, the four men who drove her daughter to do what she did should be in jail... but the law does not allow for jail terms in matters such as this.
RAE PANLOCK says the law should be changed; she says the four men who tormented her little girl should have been jailed, to send a message to other workplace bullies, and to send a message as well to young victims: stand up for yourself, and seek help.
