The Two Murrays Blog: Is Cougartown acceptable to you?

Can someone explain why it is acceptable for a popular television show to promote the idea of older women dating younger men?

Cougar Town is a very popular American television show which features a divorced mother of a teenaged boy... trying to get back into the dating scene, and targeting younger men.

Channel Seven has picked up the show for Australia, and no doubt hopes it will be a big hit here, too.

I've seen COUGAR CRUISES advertised, too.

I've conducted some research here at 2UE, and I've been told COUGARS come of age at 40. Under 40 they're still cubs, apparently... and once they go through the Cougar phase, they become Sabre Tooth Tigers. Men become dirty old men, and at a much younger age than the Cougar. Can you figure that out?

But isn't this a case of blatant double standards?

Can you imagine the public outcry if older men were featured in a television comedy, actively trying to pick up younger women? But on second thoughts, that would never happen, because that idea would never fly.

Why is it OK for older women to prey on younger men? Older women preying on young men go to the top of the ratings; older men preying on younger women go to jail.

  • Why on Earth is the age of a couple anyone else's business? So long as there is no oppressive aspect to the relationship, leave it be. It's ageist.
