TWO MURRAYS BLOG: Mobile Phones banned at Schools
Primary school students in Melbourne are being forced to hand in their mobile phones before class because of rising concern over disruptive calls and texts during school.
Under Education Department guidelines, students are allowed to carry switched-off mobiles in class... but some schools are saying NO, you have to check them in when they turn up at school in the morning.
One principal says kids are ignoring the rules, and having them on in class... so in those circumstances, the phone is confiscated and given back ONLY when a parent turns up to collect it.
The Victorian Parents and Citizens group is happy this policy is being enforced... especially since most primary school lockers are lockable.
Teachers are reporting mobile phones are turning up from around Year 4 or 5... but were told that is getting younger.
The latest Bureau of Statistics figures reveal about one third of Australian children aged 5-14 have their own phones... sure, the kids might have to have their phones for safety or security reasons, but isn't that provided while the children are in class?
And why should class time be disrupted by children who don't care about the rules, and who make and receive calls and text messages?
And what about the other issue about bullying?
There are many examples of mobile phone cameras being used to capture episodes of bullying behaviour, with those images then distributed to other telephones.
NSW schools should follow the lead of counterparts in Melbourne and ban mobiles during school time.
The argument about children needing phones to contact parents is not valid when they are in class.
This ban should be implemented at once, certainly in primary schools at the very least.
