More women are becoming addicted to gambling

I think most of us would believe that men are the gamblers in our society, and only a small portion of women would have punt.

Well it seems that more women are becoming addicted to gambling, with women making up 64% of poker machine use.

Now compared to men, women were found to have a more rapid progression into problem gambling.

Australia leads the world in the number of poker machines.

Australians pump $6 million a day through poker machines.

Dr. Timothy Lee from the University of Queensland School of Tourism said that gambling among women resulted in family and relationship breakdowns, child neglect, depression, fraud and suicidal thoughts.

Women often turned to gambling to escape trauma, loneliness, stress and boredom.

He said new steps were needed to minimise harm, such as placing cash machines away from gaming areas, installing clocks, providing information on support services and having non-gaming activities at pubs and clubs with poker machines.

Now on the same day that this survey was released, a story has popped up regarding on line gambling. My understanding is that these types of businesses are illegal, and there are major fines for anyone found setting them up or running them... but it seems the government turns a blind eye to them.

In 2008 $790 Million went off shore to gambling sites without one cent being taxed.

Now I do like to have a flutter on the poker machines, and once a year I will have a go at the horses.

There is always a group of people who will try to blame pubs, clubs, and casinos for gambling problems in society... but seriously, no one is forcing anyone to play.

Do you have a bet? How Often?

What about online? Do you play poker, and other card games on the internet?
