Should descendents of Diggers march at the back on Anzac Day

NSW RSL president Don Rowe says some descendants of veterans disrespect the Anzac Day march, turning up dressed inappropriately with dirty joggers and jeans. Should descendent s march at the back of the parade?

  • Have you ever served Steve? If the answer to that is no, then you have no idea what ANZAC Day means to service and ex-service personnel. I am all for the descendants to march, in their own group at the rear of the march behind ALL serving and ex-serving members. There is no need for them to march within the main body, it detracts from what the day is meant to be. Just because your father/mother/grandfather/grandmother served, the honour and sacrifice they earned doesn't pass down to you, it is theirs alone. The pride you feel is the legacy left for you. The descendants can show their pride by standing on the sidelines and showing support for their loved ones mates, or walk in the descendants group at the rear of the parade. The ANZAC Day March is essentially a Military Parade and the Military have a hierarchal structure and respect of that structure, it's something the civilian cannot understand. By marching amongst that structure the descendants are disrespecting the very people they believe they are honouring.

  • I am 59 yrs of age and remembered soldiers who fought in wars with my family by attending local services, I declare there is no need for descendants to take the place of these men and women by marching alongside the diggers, I do think it inappropriate for them to march alongside the diggers, maybe at the back end of a local Anzac dawn march only is appropriate, too often descendants are featured up front and centre, this is not acceptable and soon folk will loose interest searching for faces of our diggers only to find relatives. Please allow this day remain sacred and meaningful, plenty of opportunity for descendants to support their digger members of family, this day is theirs alone. Chez
