Of course it would be stpuid to change leaders just before the election. Gillard, who is smart, knows this, and so will sit tight. If Labor wins, she gets to succeed Rudd anyway, possibly in the second term, when he voluntarily moves on (the only PM to do so since Menzies). If Labor loses, she succeeds him immediately as Labor leader.The only thing standing in the way of this scenario is if Rudd tries to hang on indefinitely, Howard-style. Unlike Costello, however, Gillard will have the cojones to take Rudd out.
