A 'Drinkwise' forum in Canberra has decided the drinking age should be lifted above 18 but Steve Price asks if politicians would have the guts to pas the legislation. Can licensing laws be changed, and poice actions stop binge drinking?

Binge drinking is occurring at the same time we have an obesity epidemic so there may be one solution which tackles both problems.
I suggest alcohol manufacturers place health labels on beer, wine and spirits which show how many kilojoules are in each bottle.
If, for example, a 6-pack of vodka cruiser was the equivalent to eating 10 x Mars Bars, or a bottle of winw was the same as wolfing down 3 x Big Macs, it might make people change their drinking habits.
Kids really do drink alcohol like it's water, but it's not, and we're seeing the awful effects.

I am a mum and the binge drinking culture of our youth has impacted on m family. For the past 7 months my family has been bttling to save our son. We have spent $1000's, not to mention the emotional cost of this, trying to save him. I don't care what the Government does about alcohol, I will support them. If it means that no other family has to go through what we are going through right now.

I don't believe more restriction is the answer. Look at the US and the teenage drinking problems despite a 21 age limit. The UK likewise restricted open pub times caused people to drink more in less time. I believe better education in schools, peer education and support and most importantly more parental input. Why would we let teens drive cars, but not allow them a beer or glass of wine. teach moderation not restriction. Italian and Greek culture teaches respect and moderation towards alcohol from an early age. They have less binge drinking in their culture as a result. I agree the issue needs to be discussed. Well done.
