Asylum seekers: What's the next step?
Is it time to take in the asylum seekers? The issue is dragging on and more boats are headed to Australia. Tim Webster says seek out the smugglers, but show a little more compassion to asylum seekers - what to do next?

Merely wonder what time frame and how much patience would be shown to a common garden variety Aussie , if they were to decide and hold the ship to ransom ???

The people we need to get tough with are NOT just the people smugglers but the people causing these people to turn to people smugglers. In this case it is the Sri Lankan Government who are oppressiong the Tamil minority. People smugglers have become a convenient scapegoat nobody is looking at the real issue which is the push factor. we need to stop treating the symptoms and start treating the disease.

Because we promised the world back in 1954 that we would never turn away refugees because we helped to send millions of Jewish refugees to the gas chambers.
Some of the cretins who blog should get some facts before they spew out bile and hatred.
Why on earth you think it matters if people can pay to leave danger is beyond me but I presume if we are ever invaded you will all sit around and be persecuted or killed because you are too stupid and lazy to leave.
Now give it a rest. We already jailed these people in Indonesia for 5 years, how much longer do you think we should have jailed them?
9 years like an Afghan family story I just found?
Indonesia does not protect refugees. Full stop.

These refugees cannot go to India or Indonesia because those countries have not signed the UN Convention in relatio to refugees. In those countries, refugees are not allowed to work, etc. They want to go to any country that will allow them to work and allow their kids to go to school. The root cause, which is Sri Lankan human rights violations need to be brought up as focal issue at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in a bid for a permanent resolution. No point fixing the symptom - we need to help cure the disease!

What people need to realize is that if we take these people ( because they demand it) we will set a precedent of " stand your ground with the Aussies and they'll back down". Then we'll have to take them all. Kevin Rudd should stand his ground now & good luck beating a stand-off - but he should have left well enough alone in the first place. Remember the Tampa - seems like deja vu to me.

IâÂÂm wondering whether I can see this much condemnation towards refuges, IF they were origins from Europe !
