Time to reward better drivers? Message on speeding not sinking in

The message is not getting through to drivers to slow down. Tim Webster asks is it time to reward good drivers, rather than just punishing bad ones? His call comes following the horrific deaths of five young people allegedly speeding.

  • It is unfortunate that every now and then there is a horrendous accident that brings out all the bad elements of behaviour on our roads. We should however spare a few moments to consider reality, this being that Australia has one of the lowest traffic death per population in the world. How about a pat on the back for those young drivers that contribute towards this great achievement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_collision

  • Put speed limiters on cars. Some type of system that where you have to enter a pin before you start the car, which corresponds with what type of license you have so the car is limited to that speed restriction. If a learner/p-plater is caught driving a car without a limiter, then they lose their license automatically for so many months. Seems tough, but what else can we do to stop young people speeding and killing each other, apart from not letting them drive until they're older?

  • Further to the comments made by Tim in his editorial. Punishment does not work and in many cases creates an antagonistic attitude toward the authority figure, be they the police , parent or politician. What is required is a bonus system for good drivers. As you say, reducing costs, rebating taxes, even allowances for minor errors of judgenment. Then, this suggests that our politicians actually have an idea.
