Immunization: getting the right advice

A Health Care Complaints Commission has found the Australian Vaccination Network has allegedly been giving medical advice without authority on its website. Meryl Dorey defends the AVC with the Two Murrays.

  • Well done! Your brilliant interview skills pointed out exactly where Ms Dorey fits as far a qualified opinion on the subject of vaccination. It is amazing to me that anyone who is uneducated thinks they have the capacity to interpret scientific research that took someone years of education to achieve - Nobel Prize winners should step aside, Meryl Dorey knows better than you.

    • Yes, Meryl insists on a *live* debate, a format that does not allow the rigorous fact-checking that invariably exposes her untruths.

She has been challenged to online blog-based debates, but refuses, insisting on a live format or nothing. But this is not how science is conducted.

When the 'references' she gave to the HCCC were actually fact-checked, they turned out to be a tissue of misunderstandings or misrepresentations.

If the HCCC wasn't worth submitting a careful response to, is she likely to treat a live audience any better?

      • Odd, when I challenged Meryl to a debate she chickened out. See the discussion in the comments section of her blog here:

It seems she only wants a live debate. As soon as you say that you want a debate based on scientific evidence she gets hostile and resorts to personal attacks. Go figure.

        • Congratulations, guys, on making Meryl look exactly how she is: unqualified, conspiracy-bound, hyperbolic and incoherent.

I doff my hat to you.

          • The HCCC determined that the AVN is anti-vaccination, and not pro-choice. This is a quote by Meryl Dorey:
"There will come a time â?? I pray to God that it will happen in my lifetime â?? when those who have pushed vaccines upon innocent, helpless babies â?? doctors, pharmaceutical companies, government officials â?? will be proven to have lied and cheated these instruments of death into our childrenâ??s bloodstream."

Instruments of death? Not exactly a "balanced" message, is it.

              • Bloody brilliant, Murray and Murray! It was great to hear someone ask all the things we wish we could ask - and get the answers that only Meryl Dorey could mess up that badly!

                What a treat. Thanks!

                • I wish the host had asked her which vaccinations she has gotten over the past 20 years and which she's given to her children, since, you know, she's not anti-vaccination. Of course the answer is almost certainly none and contrary to her claims, she has in fact encouraged people not to vaccinate, even to the point that she's sold Scientology propaganda material. And the notion that she's more qualified than a doctor is laughable. The hosts did a great job.

                  • There are not two sides to every story. Vaccination is not a perfect solution but the alternatives are a health disaster of proportions I don't want to contemplate.
